Breast augmentation with implants is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries today. Historically speaking it is possibly the most performed cosmetic surgery of all time. The technology behind breast implants has in recent years evolved massively and the overall quality of the implants are much better today than just 10 years ago.
However, there might be several reasons that a breast implant exchange might be necessary. If your implants are about 10-15 years old, this might be something you want to consult with a plastic surgeon.
The most common reason for breast implant exchange is something we call a capsule. This is the internal scarring that is forming around the implants after your initial surgery.
It is perfectly normal and will happen to more or less everyone. The implants are a foreign body and therefore your body will react to them in one way or another. A capsule is not dangerous, but if it hardens up, your breasts might start to feel very hard and possibly uncomfortable.
If you think you might have a capsule, it could be a good idea to contact a plastic surgeon to have it checked out.
Another reason some might want to exchange their breast implants is implant rupture. The breast implants we offer at N1 Plastic Surgery has a unique technology in which is more or less impossible to rupture, but some brands might burst.
If this happens it is crucial to remove the damaged implant in order to control leakage from the silicone.
Finally, our bodies change. With time and age, the elasticity of the skin reduces and many find themselves looking somewhat different.
When it comes to breasts, it might be slight changes in shape and/or size, in which an exchange of implants would be beneficial.
The surgery itself is performed under general anesthesia and takes between 1 and 2 hours. The scar will usually be placed on top of your old scar, but in some cases, the surgeon might need to create a bigger scar in order to perform the surgery.
After the surgery, you will stay in the N1 Plastic Surgery recovery department for three to six hours. Here our team will take care of you, give you some food, and help you get dressed.
After your surgery, you will receive a sports bra fitted specifically for you. The bra is to be worn day and night for about 6 weeks. This is crucial in order to achieve the best result.
The first time after the surgery, you may experience a sensation of swelling, tension, and tenderness. This is temporary and will reduce gradually over the first few weeks after surgery.
One week after your surgery you will come back for the first post-surgery control. 14 days after your surgery, you will again return to the clinic and we will remove the remaining of stitches.
